People who have used it machine claim the SmartRamp and C-Flex technologies are very helpful features that helped them get quality sleep. As Philips Respironics’ entry-level option, it is also very affordable and within most people’s budget.
The Bad
The Bottomline
This product is perfect for those who need only the necessary features of a CPAP machine. While it lacks more advanced features, it is effective for most users. It may not have a heated humidifier, but you can always purchase it separately.
The DreamStation CPAP Machine is the original model of Philips Respironics’ DreamStation line of products. This is considered the company’s entry-level offering which makes it the cheapest model you can buy from the brand.
Of course, Philips has introduced more features in the newer but more expensive models since then. However, the original DreamStation Machine still remains a favorite among sleep apnea folks and even scored higher in customer satisfaction ratings when compared to its more pricey cousins. Here are some of its features and the top reasons why this product is worth considering.
Comfortable sleep all night long
Users of this CPAP machine will appreciate how its designers included features to increase the comfort level when using the product. One such feature is called the SmartRamp which gently increases the air pressure over a period of time.
With this feature, you can set the ramp time from 0 to 45 minutes at 5-minute increments. Once set, the device will take care of the rest and will slowly raise the pressure to the level prescribed by your doctor. This gives you time to acclimatize and help you fall asleep more comfortably. This is also capable of monitoring sleep apnea events throughout the ramp time’s duration. Once an event is detected, it responds accordingly to maintain the pressure.
Exhalation problem is common in those with obstructive sleep apnea. And in some PAP machines, you’ll have a slightly hard time during the exhalation phase because you’ll have to exert more effort to counter the higher pressure of the air from the device. Thankfully, the same scenario is totally eliminated in the DreamStation CPAP and you’ll continue to breathe out normally without strain. This is thanks to the machine’s C-Flex technology. This feature provides pressure relief as you exhale so you’ll still be able to breathe normally. In addition, there are three flex settings giving you the option to choose which level is most comfortable for you.
Compact and great monitoring feature
We now live in a results-oriented world so it’s understandable if you want to know just how far you’ve progressed in your sleep apnea therapy. This machine makes it easier for you to monitor your results as it tracks and records your sleep data. Data can be saved on the installed memory card and can be sent to your therapist online as the machine is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-capable.
It even has a downloadable app called DreamMapper, which is basically a self-management tool users can use to encourage them. The app provides feedback, status report, and even videos related to sleep apnea treatment. Definitely a feature loved by many!
The Philips Respironics has a specific model called the DreamStation Go which is more compact and is targeted for users who travel a lot. However, you don’t really need to buy that travel version as the DreamStation CPAP Machine is both handy and lightweight enough that you can easily bring it with you on your trips. This device measures only 5.5″ L x 7.6″ W x 3.3″H which is small enough to fit in your luggage. It is also lightweight and weighs only 2.94 pounds.
But I just wish...
When talking about additional features and improvement, it’s good to keep in mind that the DreamStation CPAP Machine is an entry-level option. So yes, it lacks some of the features of other advanced machines offered by the brand. For instance, it lacks CheckMask and Advanced Event Detection features, which may be an issue for some buyers. In addition, some buyers say that it is a noisier machine than others. Better check out its actual operational noise first and see if it’s at a level you can live with.
Also, this CPAP has no heated humidifier which could be a problem for users who live in cold and dry locales. But this can be considered a minor issues since you can actually purchase the heated humidifier as an add-on.
